NATO Releases Quantum Technology Roadmap, Accelerates Post-Quantum Cryptography Adoption Without Firm Deadline
NATO has published a public summary of its first Quantum Technology Roadmap, outlining a plan to implement its 2023 quantum strategy through various activities in quantum computing, communication, and sensing. The roadmap aims to make the Alliance 'quantum-ready' by accelerating the understanding, adoption, and integration of quantum technologies across NATO and Allied armed forces. While the roadmap includes public deadlines for activities from 2026 to the third quarter of 2029, it notably lacks a specific date for the Alliance-wide migration to post-quantum cryptography (PQC). However, a separate procurement notice from Headquarters Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (HQ SACT) for the Quantum Zero Beacon Project (QZBP) indicates a goal for broader NATO adoption of quantum-safe cryptography before 2030.
