Unit 42 Warns AI Has Shifted Cybersecurity Power Balance to Attackers
Unit 42, Palo Alto Networks' threat intelligence team, has issued a warning that artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities have fundamentally shifted the balance of power in cybersecurity from defenders to attackers. Sam Rubin, senior vice president of Unit 42, described this as a "generational shift." The team's internal testing of frontier AI models and observations of malicious use of commercially available AI tools indicate that organizations are currently ill-equipped to detect and respond to these "machine-speed attacks." Unit 42 had previously estimated that advanced AI capabilities would be in the hands of attackers within a year, and Rubin notes that the early waves of this threat are already appearing in the wild.
