US Citizen Brian Morales García Deported to Mexico, Returns After Federal Lawsuit
Brian José Morales García, a U.S. citizen born in Denver, was wrongfully deported to Mexico and spent nearly five months there before being allowed to return to the United States. His ordeal began after a traffic stop in Texas, where he was shuttled through detention facilities and allegedly coerced into signing voluntary return documents to Mexico. Despite repeatedly asserting his U.S. citizenship and possessing a birth certificate and Social Security card, federal agents reportedly dismissed his claims and threatened him with criminal charges if he continued to insist he was American. The Department of Justice, in court documents, initially claimed Morales García freely signed the documents and pointed to discrepancies in Mexican birth records, which his attorneys attribute to common errors for dual citizens.
