The open-source software community, which is crucial for maintaining modern digital infrastructure, is facing significant challenges due to the influx of AI-generated code. This code, often of poor quality, is overwhelming the human volunteers responsible for reviewing and integrating it. The burden of managing these submissions is causing burnout among developers, leading some to leave the community. GitHub, a major platform for open-source projects, reported a dramatic increase in code submissions, from 1 billion in 2025 to a projected 14 billion in 2026. This surge is attributed to AI models that facilitate easy code generation, but the quality of these contributions is often subpar, complicating integration into existing projects.
