Willamette University Leads $2 Million National Science Foundation Grant to Revolutionize Software Engineering Education
Willamette University is spearheading a five-year, $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) aimed at transforming software engineering education. Lucas Cordova, Associate Professor of Computer Science at Willamette University’s School of Computing and Information Sciences, is collaborating with Jeffrey Carver from the University of Alabama and Gursimran Walia from Augusta University. Their project involves developing the Software Engineering Tutor (SE Tutor), an AI-infused, customizable teaching and learning platform. This platform is designed to translate complex code output into actionable feedback, helping students understand the underlying concepts rather than just identifying errors. The SE Tutor builds upon the success of their previous NSF-funded project, the Testing Tutor, which demonstrated lasting improvements in students' software testing skills through inquiry-based feedback.
