IBM Advances Quantum Computing with Successful Connection of Modular Cryogenic Systems
IBM has successfully connected and cooled down two modular cryogenic systems into a single operational environment, marking a significant step towards building scalable fault-tolerant quantum computers. These modules, standing over 8 feet tall and wide, can cool to below 15 millikelvin after reaching 4 Kelvin in under five days. This new architecture is designed to link hundreds of quantum chips, providing expanded wiring capacity for chip-to-chip connections. The company plans to use L-couplers to connect multiple processors, aiming for at least 1,000 programmable qubits by 2027. This development is crucial for IBM's goal of delivering the IBM Quantum Starling in 2029, which is anticipated to be the world's first fault-tolerant quantum computer, integrating advancements in error correction, processor design, decoding, and systems engineering. IBM will install IBM Quantum Nighthawk processors into these modules later this year to further test operational performance.
