White-Hat Hackers Move 52 BTC from Coldcard Exploit to Recovery Trust for Victims
White-hat hackers have successfully moved 52.37 bitcoins, valued at over $4 million, from wallets affected by the Coldcard exploit into a recovery trust. This action was taken to safeguard the funds from malicious attackers and facilitate their eventual return to the rightful owners. The bitcoins were transferred to an address controlled by Crypto Recovery Trust, a Wyoming-based entity specifically established to help return digital assets recovered by security researchers. The Coldcard exploit, which came to light in late July, stemmed from a vulnerability in certain firmware versions that could cause wallet seeds to be generated using a weaker software-based random number generator instead of the device's secure hardware-based one. This flaw made affected Bitcoin wallets vulnerable to theft, prompting both malicious actors and white-hat hackers to target these exposed funds.
