New York Lawmaker Pushes for Single-Payer Healthcare in Upcoming Legislative Session
State Senator Gustavo Rivera is optimistic about passing a single-payer healthcare bill in New York's upcoming legislative session. The bill, which has been introduced multiple times since 1991, aims to establish a government-run healthcare system without co-pays or premiums. Rivera argues that the system could be funded through a graduated payroll tax, potentially reducing healthcare costs for 95% of New Yorkers. Despite opposition from insurance companies and some unions, Rivera believes the bill has strong support, with 34 Senate sponsors and over 70 in the Assembly.
