Flood Watch Issued for New York City Amid Heavy Rain Threat
New York City is under a Flood Watch as heavy rain and potential flash flooding are expected on Sunday morning. The National Weather Service forecasts rainfall amounts of 1.5 to 3 inches across the city, with the heaviest rain likely in eastern Brooklyn and Queens. The strongest storms could produce rainfall rates of 2 to 2.5 inches per hour. The Flood Watch remains in effect until noon, and thunderstorms have already caused ground stops at JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark airports. NYC Emergency Management has activated its Flash Flood Emergency Plan, and crews are clearing catch basins and preparing emergency resources. The city has also opened 51 overnight shelters for residents in flood-prone areas, particularly those living in basement apartments.
