Las Vegas Residents Adapt Routines to Extreme Summer Heat
Residents and workers in Las Vegas are implementing various strategies to cope with extreme summer temperatures, which have reached up to 114 degrees Fahrenheit. At Horses4Heroes, a ranch outside the city, staff and campers have adjusted their daily routines, starting activities earlier in the morning to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Ranch worker Dawn McIntosh described efforts to keep horses hydrated, including draping wet towels over a distressed horse and administering water frequently. The ranch also provides electrolyte popsicles for children and encourages them to self-regulate their hydration. Across the Las Vegas Valley, community resources such as splash pads and cooling stations, provided by Clark County, are utilized to help residents stay cool. Construction workers on major projects also rely on OSHA-regulated cooling stations to manage the heat.
