Anti-Progesterone Activity Detected in Tap Water of Three U.S. Cities, Prompting EPA Investigation Calls
A recent study has identified measurable anti-progesterone activity in water samples, including municipal tap water, collected from three U.S. cities: Austin, Texas; Blacksburg, Virginia; and Carbondale, Illinois. The study, titled 'Anti-Progesterone in Environmental Water' and published in Issues in Law & Medicine, utilized a biological assay to measure this activity, expressed as 'mifepristone equivalents.' While the findings do not definitively prove the presence of mifepristone, the abortion drug, they suggest that compounds with similar anti-progesterone effects are entering the water system. Researchers collected samples both upstream and downstream of wastewater treatment facilities and from municipal taps, finding statistically significant activity in eight out of nine sampling categories.
