New York City Approves Knicks Watch Parties Amid Economic Boost
New York City officials have approved outdoor watch parties for Knicks fans at Madison Square Garden and Central Park for Game 1 of the NBA Finals. This decision follows a previous denial of permits due to concerns from the NYPD about rowdy behavior at past events. The permits, granted after discussions between the mayor's office, the NYPD, and Madison Square Garden, are currently limited to Wednesday's game. The Knicks' playoff run has significantly boosted the city's economy, generating an estimated $202 million in economic activity, with potential to reach $465 million if the team plays all possible home games in the finals. The NYPD will staff both watch party sites to ensure safety.
