UNMISS Increases Security Patrols in South Sudan IDP Camp Following Fatal Incident
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has intensified its peacekeeping patrols in and around the Bentiu internally displaced persons (IDP) camp. This action follows a recent incident that occurred on a Wednesday, resulting in at least five fatalities and 33 injuries among civilians and security personnel. Anita Kiki Gbeho, the UN secretary-general's special representative and head of UNMISS, stated on Friday that the mission is actively collaborating with key stakeholders, including camp community leaders, state authorities, security personnel, and youth representatives, to de-escalate tensions. The violence was sparked by the arrest of a local spiritual leader, which led to clashes between security forces and civilians within the camp. UNMISS emphasizes the critical need to protect civilians who have already endured displacement and insecurity from further harm.
