Maryland Reports Record 50 Heat-Related Deaths Amidst Extreme Summer Temperatures
Maryland has experienced a record-breaking 50 heat-related deaths this summer, according to the Maryland Department of Health. This surpasses the previous record of 46 deaths in 2012. The majority of the fatalities occurred in July, with elderly residents being particularly vulnerable. State health officials are urging residents to check on vulnerable neighbors and take precautions to stay cool and hydrated. The department has also reported over 1,300 urgent care visits and 1,260 emergency calls related to heat illnesses. The heat season, which runs from May to September, may see further fatalities as extreme temperatures persist.
