UMMC Establishes Mississippi's First Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program
The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) has launched Mississippi's first physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) residency program, receiving accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. This new program completes UMMC's core residency offerings and aims to address the state's persistent physician shortage, particularly in rehabilitation medicine. Historically, UMMC medical students interested in PM&R had to leave Mississippi for their residency training. The program, led by Dr. Jennifer Hankenson, program director and associate professor of neurosurgery, will provide comprehensive training in rehabilitation medicine, with a strong foundation in internal medicine. Residents will focus on helping patients regain function and independence after injuries, illnesses, and conditions affecting mobility.
