Meredith College Navigates Higher Education Crossroads, Emphasizing Transformation Over Transaction
Meredith College, a women's college in North Carolina, is confronting the evolving landscape of higher education, characterized by declining traditional college student numbers, shifts in federal support, and rapid technological advancements. Aimee Sapp, who became Meredith College's ninth president in July 2024, is leading the institution through these challenges. Sapp emphasizes that college should be viewed as a 'transformation' rather than merely a 'transaction,' advocating for a holistic return on investment that includes critical thinking, communication skills, adaptability, and leadership, beyond just starting salaries. She also highlights a 'quiet crisis of confidence' among young women entering college, attributing it to the pandemic, social media, and pressure to have life figured out early. Meredith College, with about 1,600 students, has seen enrollment growth in the past two years but remains below pre-pandemic levels, having laid off 6% of its employees last year due to financial pressures.
