Springfield Declares State of Emergency Following Severe Storms in Western Massachusetts
Severe storms struck western Massachusetts, prompting Springfield to declare a state of emergency. The storms, which included a macroburst with winds reaching 60-70 mph, caused significant damage, including a building collapse at the Dwight Street Extension apartment complex, displacing 42 residents. The National Weather Service reported widespread damage across the region, with trees and power lines downed. The Springfield mayor highlighted the severe impact on the city's south side, and emergency services, including the Red Cross and Salvation Army, have been mobilized to assist displaced residents. As of Sunday, power outages affected over 1,000 residents, though efforts are underway to restore services.
