U.S. States Enact Bans on Lab-Grown Meat Amidst Industry Skepticism
Several U.S. states, including Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Indiana, Montana, Nebraska, and Texas, have passed legislation to ban the sale, production, or both, of cultivated (lab-grown) meat. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis publicly signed the state's law, stating, “Take your fake lab-grown meat elsewhere. We’re not doing that in the state of Florida.” This legislative push by conservative state governments targets an industry that has faced increasing skepticism from venture capitalists and challenges in commercialization. Despite an initial gold rush with over 140 companies and $3 billion in investment, the industry has struggled with high production costs, scalability issues, and regulatory hurdles. Investment in the sector significantly dropped in 2023, raising only $177 million.
