NTSB Reports Total Power Loss Before Beaufort County Plane Crash
Federal investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have released a preliminary report indicating that a private Piper PA-32 airplane experienced a total loss of engine power before crashing in a wooded area of Beaufort County, North Carolina, last month. The incident occurred shortly before 2:00 p.m. on August 6th near Pinetown. Approximately ten minutes after taking off from the Martin County Airport in Williamston, the pilot reported losing all power at an altitude of about 3,000 feet. The aircraft, registered to KL&Z Farms in Littleton, was en route to Ocracoke. The pilot attempted a forced landing on a logging path, during which the left wing struck a tree, followed by another tree, before the plane came to rest in a ditch. All three individuals on board sustained minor injuries, but the aircraft suffered substantial damage to its wings.
