Holy Trinity Anglican Church Proposes New Orange County Site with Affordable Housing Amidst Affordability Crisis
Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is seeking approval to construct a new church facility that integrates affordable housing units. The church, which has outgrown its current location on U.S. 15-501, plans to build a 10,000-square-foot, two-story church along Old Lystra Road in southern Orange County. The proposal includes two single-family homes and up to eight affordable duplex tiny homes designed for individuals transitioning out of homelessness. This initiative directly addresses the severe housing affordability crisis in the region; county data indicates that an individual needs to earn over $30 an hour to afford a two-bedroom apartment at fair market rent in Orange County. In Chapel Hill, more than half of renters allocate over 30% of their income to housing costs, forcing many to seek residences outside the town due to high rent and property taxes. The proposal is scheduled for discussion at a public meeting by Orange County and Chapel Hill leaders.
