Charlotte City Council to Vote on Controversial I-77 South Toll Lane Project Amid Community Opposition and State Pressure
The Charlotte City Council is scheduled to vote on the future of the I-77 South toll lane expansion project. This project, which has been in development since 2014, aims to add toll lanes from Uptown Charlotte to the South Carolina state line. The council previously rescinded its support for the project in May, effectively halting it. However, state leaders responded by drafting legislation that would require counties to reimburse tens of millions of dollars already invested in the expansion. Following this, state transportation leaders offered a $300 million incentive package to revive the project, bringing it back to the council for reconsideration. Community members and city leaders have expressed concerns about the project's extreme costs, potential damage to historic neighborhoods in west Charlotte, and increased noise levels. Revised maps in March attempted to address some neighborhood concerns, but opposition persists.
