In 2023, then-Attorney General Josh Stein initiated a lawsuit against HCA, alleging that the healthcare provider failed to adhere to the terms of the agreement established when it acquired Mission Hospital. This legal action stems from widespread concerns regarding the hospital's performance and patient care standards since the acquisition in 2019. The lawsuit highlights a growing distrust of Mission Hospital and its corporate leadership within the Asheville region, which heavily relies on the facility as the primary provider of advanced medical specialties and the area's sole Level One Trauma Center.
