Extreme Heat Warning Issued for Phoenix, Nearing Record Levels
The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for Phoenix, Arizona, effective from Tuesday through Thursday this week. Daytime highs are expected to reach up to 109°F (42.8°C), significantly above the seasonal average for early September. Overnight lows could climb to 89°F (31.7°C), potentially setting new records. This marks the 47th heat warning day in Phoenix for 2026, just one day shy of the record set in 2020. The city has also been combating the urban heat island effect by applying cool pavement coatings to 200 miles of streets since 2020. The National Weather Service emphasizes that heat is the leading weather-related cause of death in the U.S., with at least 136 heat-related fatalities reported in Maricopa County this year.
