Conservative Activists Accused of Using AI-Generated Deepfakes to Support Andy Biggs' Gubernatorial Campaign
Conservative political activists associated with Turning Point Action are accused of using fake, AI-generated images on social media to falsely claim Democratic support for Republican Andy Biggs in Arizona's gubernatorial race. Posts by Mary Ann Mendoza and Matt Whitmire on X featured images of an individual resembling Arizona state lawmaker Rep. Lorena Austin (D-Mesa) holding signs that read 'Demócratas por Biggs' and 'Democrats for Biggs.' Rep. Austin has denied posing for these photos, and an AI detection tool indicated a '100% AI score' for one of the images. Both Mendoza and Whitmire, who work with Turning Point Action, deleted the posts after inquiries were made. The Biggs campaign has stated it is 'not connected in any way' to these posts.
