Utah Governor Spencer Cox has stated that the state has an obligation to commemorate Charlie Kirk, CEO and co-founder of Turning Point USA, on the one-year anniversary of his assassination. Kirk was fatally shot on September 10, 2025, during a visit to Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Governor Cox described the event as one of the 'darkest days in Utah’s history' and a public assassination unlike anything seen in over half a century in the U.S. Despite initial fears of widespread unrest and a 'powder keg' situation, the community responded with peaceful rallies and calls for solidarity, rather than riots or calls for revolution. Governor Cox's response, which included condemning political violence and urging Americans to reflect on a 'culture of contempt,' received bipartisan praise, including from President Trump. The governor has also released a book, 'Off Ramp: How to Be a Peacemaker in an Age of Contempt,' centered around the assassination and the community's response.
