Monsoon Brings Drought Relief to Parts of the Western U.S.
The U.S. Drought Monitor's latest monthly outlook indicates that drought conditions are expected to improve in parts of the Great Basin and Four Corners region throughout August 2026, thanks to an active monsoon pattern (Utah Public Radio, 2026-08-13). Meteorologist Brad Rippey from the U.S. Department of Agriculture explained that a high-pressure system over the Four Corners states is shifting eastward, allowing tropical moisture to flow into Arizona, Utah, and the Great Basin. While this wet weather may benefit agriculture and ecosystems, it is unlikely to significantly replenish large reservoirs that supply water to millions in the West. The Colorado River Basin, in particular, continues to face long-term drought challenges, exacerbated by a poor snow season and warm spring temperatures.
