Phoenix Faces Record Warm Nights Due to Expanding Urban Heat Island
Phoenix is experiencing record warm nights, with temperatures tying the all-time high of 97 degrees. Researchers at Arizona State University have identified thermal advection as a key factor, where heat is transported from the west and northwest parts of the Valley into Phoenix. This phenomenon is exacerbated by urban development, which replaces natural landscapes with heat-retaining structures. The urban heat island effect is contributing to increasingly warmer nights, impacting the local climate and living conditions.
