Phoenix Introduces New Dust Storm Classification Scale
Phoenix, Arizona, has implemented a new category-based scale to classify dust storms, including haboobs, during the Southwest monsoon season. Developed by researchers at Arizona State University, the Phoenix Dust Storm Scale uses a 1-to-5 classification system to rank storms based on severity. Factors such as particulate matter concentration, geographic extent, duration, and wind gust speed are considered. This system aims to standardize the evaluation of dust storms, which are common during the monsoon season from June through September. The scale also enhances public awareness and provides consistent data for research. For example, the infamous July 5, 2011, Phoenix dust storm would be classified as a Category 5 WLH (widespread, long-duration, high-wind). Haboobs, a specific type of dust storm caused by thunderstorm downdrafts, are included in this classification system.
