Phoenix shelter opens 24/7 heat relief amid record overnight temperatures
Phoenix is experiencing an unprecedented summer with record-breaking overnight heat, prompting UMOM, a local shelter, to open a 24/7 heat relief center. The shelter has seen a surge in demand, with over 700 people already served and a 200-person waitlist. To accommodate the influx, UMOM has set up 16 indoor cooling tents. This initiative aims to provide families experiencing homelessness with a safe, cool place to sleep during dangerously high nighttime temperatures, which have reached lows of 85–90°F (29–32°C) or higher. The Valley has recorded 27 days this year with overnight lows in the 90s, far exceeding the average of seven such days in previous years (AZFamily, 2026).
