Intense Haboob Dust Storms Hit Phoenix Twice in One Week
Phoenix, Arizona, experienced two unusually intense haboob dust storms this week, marking some of the most severe events in recent years. These storms, characterized by massive walls of dust and debris, occurred due to strong downdrafts from thunderstorms stirring up loose dust. The storms reduced visibility to half a mile but occurred late at night, minimizing traffic disruptions. Both storms were classified as Category 5 on a new dust storm severity scale developed by Arizona State University, indicating extreme conditions with high dust concentrations and wind speeds of about 50 mph.
