Unusually Intense Haboob Dust Storms Strike Phoenix Twice in One Week
Phoenix, Arizona, experienced two unusually intense haboob dust storms this week, marking some of the most severe events in years, according to scientists at Arizona State University. Both storms were classified as Category 5 on the dust storm severity scale, a level rarely reached. The storms brought wind speeds of approximately 50 mph (80 kph) and significantly reduced visibility to half a mile (0.8 kilometers). The first storm occurred earlier in the week, followed by another during the early morning hours on Thursday. These events are caused by strong downdrafts from thunderstorms that stir up loose dust and debris, creating massive walls of dust that can pose serious hazards.
