Rachel Could Bring a New Flood Threat to the Southwest
Hurricane Rachel could bring dangerous surf to California and northwestern Mexico through this weekend as large swells spread outward from the storm. Rachel was a Category 1 hurricane Tuesday morning with 90 mph winds, moving west about 540 miles from Baja California Sur. Forecasters expect it to eventually turn toward Mexico as a dip in the jet stream develops. Its moisture could then spread into Arizona and New Mexico, where additional heavy rain may trigger renewed flooding, mudslides and debris flows after an unusually wet September.
