Maricopa County's Heat Relief Network Closes Amidst Alarming Rise in Heat-Related Deaths
Maricopa County's Heat Relief Network has ceased operations for the season, following a summer marked by a significant increase in heat-related fatalities. As of September 6, 629 deaths in Maricopa County are under investigation for heat-related causes, representing a 48% rise compared to the same period last year. Of these, 150 have been confirmed as heat-related, with 72 occurring in Phoenix. The network provided various resources, including over 200 locations offering respite centers, basic shelter, and water bottle fill-up stations. The 20 West Jackson Respite Center in Phoenix's Warehouse District was particularly utilized, accommodating over 37,000 guests, which accounted for 67% of all visits to network sites countywide.
