Prescribed Burns Planned in Las Cruces District to Reduce Wildfire Risk
The U.S. Wildland Fire Service has announced plans for prescribed burns in the Las Cruces District of New Mexico. These burns will target piles of juniper, piñon, oak, and ponderosa pine slash near Las Cruces in Doña Ana County, as well as vegetation and undergrowth in the Pinos Altos area of Grant County. Scheduled between September 1 and October 31, 2026, the burns aim to reduce wildfire risks, improve ecosystem health, and enhance wildlife habitats. Notices will be posted in nearby communities prior to each burn event. The initiative is a cooperative effort with local communities to provide fuel reduction treatments on Bureau of Land Management lands, protecting both private and public properties from wildfire threats.
