Flash Flood Risk Looms Over South Florida This Week
South Florida is bracing for a week of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, with the potential for flash flooding in some areas. The region remains under the influence of an upper-level low-pressure system, which is channeling significant moisture into southeastern Florida. A stalled frontal boundary to the north is further contributing to the unsettled weather pattern. Rainfall totals in Southeast Florida could exceed 8 inches in some locations by Sunday night, while Southwest Florida is expected to receive 1 to 3 inches. Fort Lauderdale has already recorded 17.14 inches of rain this September, more than double its monthly average of 8.02 inches, making it the fourth wettest month at the city’s airport since 1999. Saturated ground conditions in Broward and Palm Beach counties heighten the risk of flooding as thunderstorms repeatedly pass over the same areas.
