Socialist Congressional Candidate Criticizes Debbie Wasserman Schultz for Running in Majority-Black Florida District
Elijah Manley, a self-identified 'Democratic socialist' congressional candidate, has accused incumbent Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) of attempting to diminish Black representation by running in Florida’s 20th Congressional District. Wasserman Schultz, a white candidate, is competing against four Black opponents, including Manley, in the Democratic primary for the district, which is predominantly Black. Manley stated that it is 'cynical' for the congresswoman to 'carpetbag' into the district and undermine Black representation in a split field. Wasserman Schultz decided to run in the 20th District after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis implemented a new congressional map earlier this year, which significantly altered her previous district (Florida’s 25th) and her residential district (Florida’s 22nd) to be more favorable to Republicans.
