Palm Beach Zoo Highlights Gopher Tortoises as 'Engineers of Our Ecosystem'
The Palm Beach Zoo is drawing attention to the critical ecological role of the gopher tortoise, an often-overlooked animal in Florida. Callie Carpenter, the zoo's Associate Curator, emphasized that these tortoises are vital 'engineers of our ecosystem' due to their elaborate burrow systems. These burrows not only provide shelter for the tortoises themselves but also create habitats for approximately 350 other species of animals. The zoo is featuring a resident gopher tortoise named Franklin to educate the public about the importance of these reptiles. As part of this initiative, employees of the City of West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County are offered free admission to the zoo, along with discounted guest tickets, to encourage engagement with local conservation efforts.
