Florida Reports First Death of 2026 from Vibrio Vulnificus Bacteria
Florida has reported its first death of the year linked to Vibrio vulnificus, a bacteria often associated with raw or undercooked shellfish and warm coastal waters. As of July 30, the state confirmed 12 cases, including one death in Palm Beach County. This marks a notable increase compared to last year's total of 33 cases and five deaths. Vibrio vulnificus, sometimes referred to as 'flesh-eating' bacteria, can cause severe infections, including necrotizing fasciitis. Symptoms can escalate quickly, leading to severe health complications or death.
