Belmont Public Schools Face Budget Challenges Amid Rising Costs
Belmont Public Schools are preparing for a challenging fiscal year 2028 budget due to rising costs and limited projected revenue. Two years after an $8.4 million override was approved by residents, the district is facing a tense balancing act. Superintendent Jill Geiser highlighted the ongoing tension between available resources and needs. The Belmont Education Association and Belmont School Committee recently ratified contracts with a 2.3% cost-of-living adjustment for teachers, which is lower than other Massachusetts teacher unions. Despite this, the district is struggling to cover growing costs with the allocated revenue. The Multi-Year Budget Advisory Committee (MYBAC) has been instrumental in guiding the town's financial planning, helping to extend the benefits of the 2024 override.
