Jackson County Faces $250 Million Settlement Over Property Tax Assessments
Jackson County, Missouri, is set to return $250 million to property owners following a proposed settlement over property tax assessments that exceeded state law limits. The county had increased property taxes on many homeowners by more than 15% in 2023, violating state law. The settlement, which must be approved by a judge, will provide tax credits to current property owners for the overcharged amounts in 2023 and 2024. Those who have sold their properties can apply for refunds. The settlement affects approximately 207,000 taxpayers and complies with a new county law and executive order. Jackson County Executive Phil LeVota described the settlement as a significant step forward, reversing the county's previous stance against lowering property taxes.
