Florida's Oyster Shell Recycling Boosts Marine Life in Gulf of Mexico
Florida's initiative to recycle oyster shells from restaurants and seafood plants is having a positive impact on marine life in the Gulf of Mexico. Scientists have observed that these shells, once discarded as waste, are now fostering the growth of microorganisms and creating biofilms. This process is crucial as it provides a habitat for baby oysters to latch onto and grow, thereby restoring oyster reefs. These reefs are vital for marine ecosystems as they offer habitat for various marine species and help filter water, improving the overall health of the ocean environment. The restoration efforts are significant, given that 90% of oyster reefs have been lost. The presence of these reefs has led to a resurgence in populations of marine creatures like turtles and dolphins, reaching levels not seen in over 25 years.
