Hillsborough County Schools Propose Workforce Housing to Retain Educators Amid Rising Costs

The district is exploring the use of property near the former McLane Middle School in Brandon, which is currently underutilized, to develop housing for teachers and staff. This initiative aims to offer affordable living options to school employees by partnering with a vendor who will seek federal, state, and local grants to build the housing. The plan is to lease the property to the vendor, who will then offer reduced rent to school employees. The district believes this approach will help attract and retain quality educators, ultimately benefiting the students by ensuring that all teaching positions are filled with qualified staff.
