Florida Man Arrested for Illegally Importing Livestock from New World Screwworm Infested Zone
Roger Rodriguez Vega of Maitland, Florida, was arrested after allegedly re-entering Florida with 24 sheep and goats from Texas, a state designated as a New World Screwworm (NWS) infested zone. According to Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson, Rodriguez Vega was initially denied entry at the Pensacola Agricultural Inspection Station for failing to provide a valid Official Certificate of Veterinary Inspection, a requirement under Florida law and the state's emergency NWS protections. Despite being refused entry, investigators from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Office of Agricultural Law Enforcement (OALE) determined that Rodriguez Vega bypassed the inspection station by re-entering Florida through Georgia. He was subsequently located and stopped, where he again failed to produce the necessary documentation for the animals.
