Rep. Escobar Seeks EPA Probe into Marathon Refinery's Emissions Incident
U.S. Representative Veronica Escobar has requested an investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) into an emissions incident at Marathon Petroleum's El Paso refinery. The incident, which occurred on August 4-5, resulted in the release of nearly five tons of pollutants, including sulfur dioxide and 1,3-butadiene. Escobar's letter to the EPA questions whether Marathon complied with federal air quality standards and why local officials and the public were not informed in a timely manner. Residents near the refinery reported strong odors and health concerns, prompting Escobar to demand answers and accountability from Marathon and regulatory agencies.
