Marathon Petroleum Refinery Issued Noncompliance Notice After Wastewater Discharge into Stormwater Basin
Marathon Petroleum Refinery in El Paso, Texas, received a notice of noncompliance from El Paso Water after wastewater from its facility entered a stormwater basin. The incident, which occurred in late September, involved a wastewater leak from a transfer line that led to wastewater flowing into a nearby retention pond and filling tank basins on Marathon's property. Marathon stated that significant flooding on September 22 prompted them to contain wastewater and stormwater runoff in a retention pond to prevent it from leaving the refinery property. The company is currently transferring the wastewater back to its treatment system. El Paso Water confirmed the incident and issued the noncompliance notice, requiring Marathon to stop, contain, clean up, and remediate the release to minimize impact on the stormwater system. City Rep. Josh Acevedo expressed concern over the lack of communication regarding the incident, stating his office was not contacted.
