Natura Resources' Liquid-Fueled Nuclear Reactor Gains Key Safety Approval from U.S. Department of Energy
The U.S. Department of Energy has approved a Nuclear Safety Design Agreement for an experimental molten salt reactor being developed by Natura Resources at Abilene Christian University. This agreement establishes the regulatory framework necessary for the construction and testing of the liquid-fueled research reactor, known as the MSR-1. Unlike traditional reactors that use solid uranium fuel, this reactor utilizes uranium tetrafluoride dissolved in a molten fluoride salt matrix, which serves as both the fuel and coolant. The design allows for operation at lower pressures, reducing the risk of pressure-driven accidents. The reactor's passive safety systems rely on gravity and natural physics to manage temperature rises and power failures, enhancing safety without the need for mechanical or electrical intervention.
