Texas Prisons Face Criticism Over Lack of Air Conditioning Amidst Heatwave
Texas prisons are under scrutiny for their lack of air conditioning, which has led to dangerous conditions for inmates during extreme heat. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) has been criticized for its 'heat-sensitivity score' system, which is intended to prioritize inmates for air-conditioned 'cool beds' based on medical conditions. However, this system has been deemed ineffective by a federal judge, as it fails to adequately identify those at risk. The cost of fully air-conditioning all 101 prison facilities is estimated at $1.5 billion, with completion not expected until 2033. Despite legislative efforts, such as House Bill 3006, to mandate climate control, these have repeatedly failed to pass in the Senate.
