Ohio Reports Surge in Deadly Fungal Infection Cases, Candida auris Resistant to Treatments
Ohio is experiencing a significant increase in cases of Candida auris, a deadly fungal infection, with nearly 300 reported cases this year. Dr. David Margolius, Director of the Cleveland Department of Public Health, highlighted that this hospital-acquired infection is becoming increasingly resistant to available treatments. Patients in hospitals and nursing homes are most vulnerable, with the infection proving fatal in 30% to 70% of cases. Candida auris spreads through contact with contaminated surfaces in healthcare settings, such as bedrails and doorknobs. Cuyahoga County leads with 61 cases, followed by Hamilton (33), Franklin (22), and Montgomery County (17). The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) notes that some strains of Candida auris are resistant to all three classes of antifungal medication.
