Austin Firefighters Confine Massive Blaze Near Flea Market, Two Treated for Minor Injuries
Austin firefighters have successfully confined a large fire at the Austin Country Flea Mart to its building of origin, following a massive blaze that erupted along East U.S. Highway 290. The initial call came in around 6 p.m. on Sunday, prompting multiple units from the Austin Fire Department and surrounding agencies, including Pflugerville Fire Department crews, to respond. Responding crews observed significant black smoke, leading to an upgrade to a second alarm and a request for additional firefighters and water. Although initially contained to a few buildings, winds pushed embers downwind, igniting a brush fire that involved a tire pile, creating a large black smoke plume visible for miles. As of 8 p.m., the fire was confined, but several flea market structures had collapsed due to fire damage. Austin-Travis County EMS treated two individuals for minor injuries, neither of whom were firefighters. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
