Heavy Rain Causes Power Outages in El Paso and Southern New Mexico
Heavy rainfall and strong winds have caused significant power outages across El Paso, Texas, and parts of Southern New Mexico. As of 9:25 p.m. local time on 16 September 2026, approximately 10,994 customers of El Paso Electric were without power due to 55 separate outages. The affected areas include West El Paso, the Upper Valley, Anthony, Vinton, Berino, and Las Cruces. Severe weather conditions, including lightning and torrential rain, have been cited as the primary causes of the outages. Restoration efforts are ongoing, but the utility company has not provided an estimated time for full power restoration. A flood advisory was also issued for South Central Doña Ana County and Northwest El Paso, warning of minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas.
